Cultivating the land has run in the Harmston family blood for generations. So it’s no surprise that when founders Peggy & Greg Harmston moved back home to the hills of Massbach, they started their search for what the ridges of their rural land could support.

The start of the vineyard at Massbach Ridge was in 2000, with the Massbach tasting room opening in late 2003. We started with just a few styles of wines and have expanded to over 15 wines. In 2011, our second wine tasting room was opened in downtown Galena on 117 N. Main St..

We invite you out to either of our locations to discover your new favorite wine and relax in a simple and laid-back atmosphere. Schedule a tour with a group of your friends and family or stop in to one of our upcoming events.

Meet the Winemaker

Since growing up on her family’s rural Illinois dairy farm, Peggy Harmston has always been inspired by the land. It called her out of the office and into the fields to cultivate a dream. Peggy and her husband, Greg, had a vision that the beautiful ridges of Massbach in the forgotten hills of Jo Daviess County could grow bountiful grape vines unexpected for Illinois.

In 2003, the first vine was planted. Peggy has been a student of wine since. She enjoys experimenting with new techniques and grapes to create a taste that you’ll never forget.

Peggy is active in the Illinois Grape Growers and Vintner’s Association to give back to the wine community that has already provided educational assistance and industry support. When she’s not in the vineyard crafting the vines, you’ll find her hunting the land and chasing their three active children.

Stop in and say hi to Peggy. She loves to hear about how you enjoy your Massbach Wine.
